Kanye West is clearly a narcissist, someone infatuated with their own vanity and egotistic admiration of their own self. West has demonstrated several times that not only his music but his outlook on music and life is far superior to anyone else. This past Sunday at the Grammy Awards, West’s narcissism was on full view for the world to see. In his comments after the ceremony, West stated his beliefs clearly: “Because when you keep on diminishing art and not respecting the craft and smacking people in their face after they deliver monumental feats of music, you’re disrespectful to inspiration.” While his comments belittled the work of winner Beck, Kanye claims to be the “expert” of art and all things related, the most telling sign of narcissism. West fails to recognize the perspective of other people and extols his view as greater than the Recording Academy or millions who have bought Beck records.

There’s no denying West’s musical talents and bombastic personality. We all once worshiped Muhammad Ali at one point. But in today’s society where camaraderie is lauded and maliciousness is denounced, West will always be hated or, as he suggests, “disrespected.”
